Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and many more of the Social Networking. There is so much hype about social media these days and along with hype comes confusion. I have been working and spending many hours over the last week and being in the SEO/SEM/SMM arena, it is important to spend endless hours learning and studying just like any other profession.
What did I find out for you? Well, there is a distinct difference with Social Networking and Social Media. Social Networking is the digital version of networking. Networking can be done for social reasons and business development. It can be confusing and just like in person, socializing can touch business and pleasure.
Using the Social Networking sites like Twitter and Facebook is done by most for social reasons so it becomes very difficult to do business development with a very general audience. As most business owners try to use general audiences to build their clients it is not very targeted so you will bury yourself with people that may never even consider the product or service offering.
To properly and effectively use social networking for business growth it has to be done creatively. For example, with Twitter, it is great to use it as a networking tool and grow your followers, but never approach followers and spam them until the un-follow. Be a good guest and treat Twitter like a big party and you are mingling in the grand ballroom. Twitter is still in its infancy will take time to develop but it has potential and you can always guage your follower count if you are doing a good job. If people scatter then imagine your in a room and you create a void where you stand. If the crowd flocks in your direction then keep going. If not, re-evaluate the approach.
When considering sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, it becomes more challenging to implement and use for business development. The easy side of social networking is to socialize, but utilizing social networking for business development requires skill, patience and creativity. It can be wise to hire an SMM expert to help you get started.
Social Media Marketing can cross the fine line of Off-Page optimization. Utilizing tools like Digg.com and Delicous.com which are classified as social bookmarking sites then they also have to be used optimally to achieve effective business development results.
